Fortinet has announced the findings of its FortiGuard Threat Landscape Research (FTLR) that show four methods of money making malware by the cyber-criminals to take into consideration in 2013.
From October 2012, out of the four methods of money making malware is : Malware Simda.B which appears as Flash update on the screen in order to trick the users into getting full installation rights thereby making it easier for the malware to steal the user’s personal information and extract money from its online account after installation.
Similarly FakeAlert.D appears as a pop-up window indicating virus infection in the user’s computer and to install fake antivirus software with a fee. Ransom.BE78 (ransomware) demands payment to help the user encrypt the data. Zbot.ANQ interrupts user’s online bank login attempts and tricks them to install software on their smartphone thereby transferring funds to a fake account.
The report shows increasing activity in mobile malware variants of the Android Plankton ad kit as well as in hacktivist Web server vulnerability scanning.
Guillaume Lovet, Senior Manager , FortiGuard Labs Threat Response Team said, “Either way, the level of activity we’re seeing with ad kits today suggests that Android users are highly targeted and thus should be especially vigilant when downloading apps to their smartphones.”
To secure Web servers against this threat, FortiGuard Labs has recommended updating to the latest version of PhPMyAdmin.
