Google India and YouTube have launched the Digital Wellbeing Guidebook for Indian Families, a free resource developed in collaboration with experts from NIMHANS, Fortis Healthcare, parenting advocates, and celebrity parents. The initiative aims to help Indian families move beyond debates around screen-time limits and instead build healthier digital habits through practical, evidence-backed guidance.
The guidebook has been tailored specifically for Indian households, taking into account the country's unique digital landscape where smartphones are used for education, entertainment, communication, and financial transactions. It has been created with inputs from mental health, education, and child development specialists.
The guidebook encourages parents to replace sudden device restrictions with structured conversations and shared family rules around technology use. The resource also includes suggestions on creating family media agreements, setting up tech-free spaces at home, and making parents active participants in their children's digital lives.
The guidebook also addresses several challenges that are particularly relevant to Indian families. It provides recommendations for balancing screen time with academics, acknowledging that digital platforms have become important learning tools for students preparing for school and competitive examinations.
The guide also suggests using features such as YouTube's "Who's Watching" profiles to improve child safety while maintaining adult privacy. It also highlights tools that can help families improve digital literacy and protect themselves from online financial scams.
According to Google, the initiative brings together healthcare professionals and parenting advocates who believe healthy digital habits begin with parents setting the right example.
The Digital Wellbeing Guidebook is available as a free download through Google's website. Along with the guidebook, parents and educators can also access conversation starters and interactive resources designed to encourage safe and responsible technology use at home.
