Govt issues notice to Twitter for complying orders on regulating content
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has set a deadline of July 4 for social media giant Twitter to comply with the country’s past orders on regulating content on the platform, failing to which Twitter may lose intermediary status, which means it will be liable for all the comments posted on its platform.
The ministry issued a notice to Twitter’s Chief Compliance Officer and gave the social media company “one last opportunity” to act by July 4 on multiple content take-down notices. Failure to comply with the notice may lead to loss of immunity as an intermediary under the IT Act 2000, the ministry warned.
The request from the Indian government was to block multiple accounts and some tweets from international advocacy group Freedom House, journalists, politicians and supporters of the farmers’ protest.
According to the report, there are several other orders with which Twitter is yet to comply and they have been given a final deadline of July 4 for compliance. There have been several episodes in the past in which Twitter has been used by miscreants to circulate inflammatory posts like hate content which have triggered violence and extreme reactions.
As per section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the government reserves the power to issue directions for blocking public access to any information under specific circumstances. It can ask to take down any digital information in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, and defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states, or public order.
