The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has cautioned taxpayers about a surge in fake GST notices and summons being circulated by fraudsters. The warning follows complaints from businesses receiving calls and documents from individuals posing as GST officials.
According to the CBIC, scammers are sending forged communications that closely resemble official GST notices. These documents misuse the CGST logo and carry fabricated Document Identification Numbers (DINs) to appear authentic, misleading unsuspecting taxpayers.
The tax authority has advised businesses to verify the DIN mentioned on any GST-related communication through the official CBIC portal. Genuine notices will be validated instantly on the system. If the DIN does not match or fails verification, taxpayers are urged to treat the notice as fraudulent and report it immediately.
The CBIC emphasized that all official communications issued by GST authorities mandatorily carry a valid DIN and that verification is the most effective way to guard against such scams. Taxpayers are also advised not to share personal or financial information in response to unverified calls, messages, or documents.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting taxpayers from fraud and encouraged vigilance to prevent financial loss and misuse of information.
