I was guided by a ‘spiritual guru’ for 20 years: Ex-NSE chief told SEBI

Former NSE chief, Chitra Ramkrishna, who was questioned by the CBI over allegations of sharing information with a 'Himalayan Yogi', said that she met the latter 20 years ago on the banks of the Ganges. Calling him a "spiritual force", Ramkrishna told SEBI that he gave her his email address for further communication which she used for personal and professional matters.

The Income Tax Department on Thursday also raided the premises of the former NSE MD and CEO. She is being investigated for allegedly making illegal financial gains by sharing internal confidential information of NSE to an unknown person.

Recently, market regulator Securities and Exchange Board (Sebi) also slapped a fine of Rs 3 crore on Ramkrishna for irregularities in the appointment of Anand Subramanian as Chief Strategic Officer. She however clarified, saying that she was being guided by a ‘yogi’ who lives in the Himalayas. She was directed to pay the penalty within 45 days.

Chitra Ramkrishna was among a group of executives who in the early 1990s started NSE as a challenger to the more established BSE Ltd, then known as Bombay Stock Exchange. She was appointed joint managing director of NSE in 2009 and in 2013, promoted to CEO, according to a Reuters report.

She was later ousted from NSE in 2016 for her role in the co-location and algo trading scam and abuse of power, PTI reported.

The spiritual guru, who Ramkrishna claimed was dwelling in Himalayan ranges, guided her on personal and professional matters for 20 years. This was revealed in an order by market regulator Sebi against Ramkrishna and others in a matter of governance lapses in the appointment of Anand Subramanian as the chief strategic advisor and his re-designation as group operating officer and advisor to MD.
