IBM has recently announced the z13 which is credited to be one of the most sophisticated computer systems ever built to deliver scale and economy together with real-time encryption and analytics to help meet the expectations of consumers. IBM has invested over 5 years in building this giant of a mainframe, keeping mobility in mind. It involves $1-billion investment and exploits the innovation of more than 500 new patents and represents collaboration with more than 60 clients – underscoring IBM’s singular commitment to providing higher-value and innovative technologies to their clients.

The new mainframe supercharges the world’s premier data and transaction engine for the mobile economy. As the mobile computing becomes ubiquitous and the new face of business, creating an intelligent interaction with the consumer requires businesses to gain real-time information from each business transaction. This requires having the business transaction, the operational data and analytics at the same place, at the same time and then be able to repeat this for every transaction each consumer is making. “Only the mainframe brings all these attributes together,†asserts Viswanath Ramaswamy, Country Leader – Server Solutions (POWER & Mainframe), IBM India (P) Limited. “The system is able to process 2.5 billion transactions a day, which are persistent, protected and auditable from end to end, adding assurance as mobile transactions grow,†he adds. z13 is the world’s fastest processor and sports 300-per cent more memory and 100-per cent more bandwidth. The mainframe will also be able to analyze transactions in real time through a technology called Vector Analytics. This intelligent feature can help guarantee the ability of the client to run real-time fraud detection on 100 per cent of their business transactions by delivering “on-the-fly†analytic insights that are 17X faster than competitive systems at a fraction of the cost.
However, data security remains one of the top priorities of mainframe clients, including financial services, communications services, automotives, hospitals, universities and governments. “The new z13 has hundreds of security patents pending (or patents delivered). There are 500 patents for the new mainframe and many are security related.
