Breaking News
GitHub has added more than two million developers from India in 2026 so far, taking its total user base in the country to 27 million, according to company data. The figure marks a sharp rise from 21.9 million recorded in October 2025, positioning India as the platform’s fastest-growing developer community globally.
The growth underscores India’s increasing significance for the Microsoft-owned platform as it targets one billion developers worldwide by 2030. India now accounts for roughly one in seven new developers joining GitHub globally, contributing to its overall base of over 180 million users.
GitHub Chief Operating Officer Kyle Daigle said, the surge reflects the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools across the software development ecosystem in India. He noted that developers ranging from students to enterprise professionals are leveraging AI to accelerate coding and problem-solving.
AI Tools Driving Developer Growth
The rise in developer numbers is closely tied to advancements in AI-powered coding tools. Technologies such as GitHub Copilot and newer agent-based command-line tools are enabling developers to automate tasks and tackle complex problems more efficiently.
According to Daigle, AI-assisted development has evolved from simple code generation to more advanced, context-aware systems capable of working autonomously on tasks. This shift has led to faster workflows, increased code contributions, and higher activity across repositories and projects.
India has also emerged as a major contributor to open-source innovation. Developers in the country have made over 7.5 million contributions to open-source AI projects on GitHub. Several India-origin projects, including Hyperswitch, ERPNext, ToolJet, and Bruno, are seeing growing global adoption.
Expanding Community and Strategic Focus
To support its expanding user base, GitHub has been strengthening its presence in India through community engagement initiatives, including hackathons, campus programs, and developer meetups. The company has collaborated with organisations such as Infosys and coding communities like Hack Club to promote learning and innovation among students and professionals.
GitHub currently works with more than 100 campus experts across India and offers access to its Student Developer Pack, which provides tools and resources commonly used in professional development environments.
The platform has also become increasingly central to Microsoft’s broader AI strategy. Over the past year, GitHub has been integrated more closely with Microsoft’s CoreAI unit, reflecting its growing role in shaping the future of AI-driven software development.
