India has emerged as one of the most targeted nations globally for cyber threats, particularly across email, malware, and ransomware vectors, according to Trend Micro’s 2024 telemetry report.
The findings reveal a troubling trend: India accounted for 6.9% of global email threats—over 1.03 billion incidents—and dominated Southern Asia with a 90.78% share, highlighting its critical vulnerability in this domain.
Malware attacks also remain rampant, with 19.3 million detections positioning India 3rd globally and 2nd in Asia.
Key sectors like banking, finance, and government faced repeated attacks from malware families such as CoinMiner and FakeMS.
Ransomware remains a severe threat, with India logging 209,000 incidents, 3.36% of the global total and 77.68% within Southern Asia—primarily driven by the persistent WannaCry variant.
AI is increasingly weaponized by threat actors to automate attacks, create deepfakes, and enhance social engineering, making breaches faster and harder to detect.
At the same time, AI-driven defenses—like security-specific large language models—are emerging to counter these risks.
Globally, email threats topped 1.49 trillion, ransomware reached 6.23 million, and malware crossed 407 million.
In contrast, organizations adopting proactive, intelligence-led cybersecurity strategies reported reduced risk scores on the Cyber Risk Index, signalling the importance of AI-backed resilience.
