India Rejects U.S. F-35 Fighter Jet Proposal
2025-08-13
Amid trade tensions, India has declined the U.S. offer of F-35 jets, prioritizing “Make in India” with a focus on joint design, indigenous production, and technology transfer to bolster strategic autonomy.
The Future defence deals must include technology transfer and support indigenous production to strengthen strategic autonomy.
The decision was conveyed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s February visit to the White House, where President Donald Trump had pitched the aircraft sale as a cornerstone of deeper defense ties.
The move comes as Trump unexpectedly announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 7, catching New Delhi off guard.
While India has ruled out immediate retaliation, it is exploring ways to reduce its trade surplus with Washington, including increasing imports of U.S. natural gas, gold, and communication equipment.
However, defense acquisitions are not part of the strategy, marking a pause in high-end arms purchases from the U.S.
The F-35, among the world’s most advanced fighter jets, has been a longstanding American offer, viewed as part of efforts to counter China’s growing influence in Asia.
India’s rejection underscores its focus on self-reliance and technology transfer in future defense deals.
Despite tensions—exacerbated by Trump’s disputed claims on India-Pakistan diplomacy—bilateral engagement continues, with preparations underway for the Quad leaders’ summit.
