Instagram is introducing clearer labels for AI-generated influencer accounts and may reduce their visibility when creators fail to disclose synthetic identities, as the platform responds to growing concerns over transparency and authenticity online.
Instagram is stepping up its efforts to distinguish AI-generated personalities from real people on the platform, announcing new disclosure requirements for accounts built around entirely artificial identities. The Meta-owned social network said it will introduce clearer labels for profiles featuring people created using generative artificial intelligence and take action against accounts that do not make the disclosure.
The company explained in a blog post that the move is intended to give users greater clarity when they encounter an account that appears to represent a real person but is actually built around an AI-generated character. Instagram previously used the term “AI creator” for some such profiles, but acknowledged that the wording could be interpreted as referring to a human creator who simply uses artificial intelligence as part of their content-production process.
Under the revised approach, the existing designation will be replaced with an “AI-generated profile” label. The new terminology is designed to make the nature of the account more immediately apparent to users and indicate that the person portrayed has been created or generated with AI.

Clearer disclosure across Instagram content
Instagram said the new disclosure will be applied to content associated with AI-generated influencers, including posts, Reels and Stories. The platform also plans to display an “AI-generated profile” badge prominently below the account handle and display name in the profile header.
The company said it has received feedback from users who were uncomfortable discovering only later that an apparently human profile was actually built around a synthetic person. As generative AI tools become increasingly accessible, artificially created personalities have begun appearing more frequently across social platforms, making transparency a growing concern for users.
Instagram is also linking disclosure compliance with content distribution. Profiles that do not appropriately identify themselves as AI-generated could face reduced visibility, with their posts potentially excluded from recommendations to people who do not already follow the account. This could affect placements across areas such as Reels, Explore and suggested content in users’ feeds.
The move represents a broader attempt by social platforms to establish clearer boundaries around synthetic media as AI-generated images, videos and virtual personalities become increasingly realistic.
Move follows wider scrutiny of Meta's AI policies
Instagram's announcement comes after criticism surrounding one of Meta's AI-powered image-generation features. The tool enabled users to create images using the likenesses of other individuals, raising concerns about consent and the unauthorised use of people's identities. Meta subsequently removed the feature.
The latest policy change also arrives amid broader scrutiny of Meta's approach to user safety. Last week, the company agreed to an $18 billion settlement with U.S. states and territories over allegations concerning the impact of Facebook and Instagram on children.
As part of that agreement, Meta is expected to introduce additional measures intended to strengthen protections for younger users, including default daily usage limits and restrictions during nighttime hours. The developments highlight the increasing pressure on Meta to address transparency, safety and responsible use of AI across its social platforms.
