Is Google AI CEO Demis Hassabis next in line to succeed Sundar Pichai?

Amid a rapidly transforming tech landscape dominated by artificial intelligence (AI), Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google is once again at the centre of industry speculation over its leadership future.  There are rumours going around that Google AI leadership — particularly Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind — may likely be in line to succeed Sundar Pichai as chief executive of Alphabet.

While neither Alphabet nor Google has made any official statement, recent developments and media coverage have fueled speculation around the company’s succession planning and the rising strategic role of AI leadership within its organizational hierarchy.

Demis Hassabis, co-founder of DeepMind — the London-based AI lab acquired by Google in 2014 — has long been seen as one of the brightest minds in the company. Following Alphabet’s internal consolidation of its AI research arms, Google Brain and DeepMind, into a single entity named Google DeepMind in 2023, Hassabis was appointed CEO of the unified AI division.

According to a Bloomberg report, this move was seen internally as a signal of Hassabis’s increasing influence over Alphabet’s most critical strategic direction: AI development and deployment. Hassabis has since then led key AI projects, including the development of Gemini, Google’s flagship generative AI model that rivals OpenAI’s GPT series.

Hassabis' swift rise in recent years has followed a pattern similar to that of Pichai’s own journey to the top.

As AI takes centre stage across product lines — from Google Search to Workspace and Android — leadership with deep technical and ethical understanding of AI is seen as vital to Alphabet’s long-term vision.
