Reliance Industries’ digital arm, Jio Platforms, has launched a cloud-based virtual desktop service for its set-top box users. Jio claimed that the AI-powered service, called JioPC, can “transform any TV into a fully functional computer” via its set-top box. The set-top box, which comes with Jio’s home broadband service or can be purchased separately for Rs. 5,499, offers a cloud-based PC experience on a TV screen.
Currently in free trial mode and available through a waitlist, customers can simply plug in their keyboard and mouse to access the virtual desktop on their TV. Once invited, users can access the virtual desktop by connecting a keyboard and mouse to their TV. The service includes pre-installed LibreOffice, while Microsoft Office applications can be used via the browser.
JioPC, however, currently has no support for peripherals such as cameras and printers.
Industry experts point out that this service has the potential to change the PC landscape in India.
According to government data, India has nearly 57 million active pay-TV set-top box users. At the same time, the traditional direct-to-home (DTH) TV market is shrinking as more consumers switch to internet-based platforms. The active DTH subscriber count fell by 8% year-over-year as of March.
According to the company's website, the cloud system includes open-source software like LibreOffice for productivity tasks. Microsoft Office applications can be used through a web browser, but are not pre-installed.
“It is ideal for browsing, running productivity apps, educational tools, attending online classes, and more,” the company said. “It is affordable, requires no upfront cost, and eliminates maintenance or upgrade worries since everything is managed in the cloud.”
