The Government of Karnataka has cleared the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) focused on Artificial Intelligence in biotechnology, marking a significant step toward advancing research and innovation in emerging technologies. The facility will be set up at Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) located in Electronics City Phase 1.
The project, with an estimated investment of ₹20 crore, will be implemented over four years in collaboration with Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP). The initiative aims to strengthen the intersection of AI and biotechnology, enabling cutting-edge research and fostering industry-academia collaboration.
State IT and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge highlighted that the move aligns with Karnataka’s broader vision of building future-ready capabilities in deep technology. He noted that the state is actively investing in AI and related domains to accelerate innovation and maintain its leadership in next-generation industries.
₹100 Crore Technology Museum Under PPP Model
In a parallel development, the Cabinet has also approved the creation of a Technology & Innovation Museum in east Bengaluru. The project will be developed at the NGEF campus in Baiyappanahalli under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with a total estimated cost of ₹100 crore.
To facilitate this, the government has approved the transfer of a 51% stake in the Karnataka Technology & Innovation Museum Foundation (KTIMF) to the Unboxing BLR Foundation. The remaining stake will continue with the state, ensuring a collaborative governance structure.
The museum is envisioned as a hub to promote scientific awareness, innovation, and startup culture, while also encouraging public engagement with technology. Of the total project cost, ₹49 crore will be contributed by the state government, while ₹51 crore will come from the private partner.
These initiatives reflect Karnataka’s continued focus on strengthening its innovation ecosystem and positioning itself as a leading hub for AI, biotechnology, and advanced research in India.
