Uttar Pradesh has stepped up its cybersecurity collaboration to protect the 45-day-long Mahakumbh 2025 in the sacred city of Prayagraj from the growing threat of cyberattacks. Recognized globally, the Mahakumbh Mela is a major gathering, making it an attractive target for cybercriminals seeking to disrupt services, deface websites, or defraud visitors.
To tackle these threats, the UP Police have teamed up with experts from IIT-Kanpur and IIIT-Allahabad. Under the leadership of Tanu Upadhyay, Cyber Officer (CO) for Mahakumbh 2025, a specialized team from IIT-Kanpur and an expert from IIIT-Allahabad are stationed in the mela area to support 180 police personnel who have been specially trained in cybersecurity at the National Cybercrime Training Centre (CyTrain).

The UP Police are overseeing the event’s digital security, with guidance from ADG (Cybercrime) Binod K Singh at the police headquarters in Lucknow. “Cybercriminals often target high-profile events like Mahakumbh to cause disruptions, so we are ensuring all digital platforms are secure,” said SSP (Mela) Rajesh Dwivedi.
Robust cybersecurity and threat mitigation
The official Mahakumbh website, kumbh.gov.in, its hosting server, and mobile applications have all undergone extensive security audits by leading agencies such as the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), CERT-In, and the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO). These audits aim to identify and address vulnerabilities in preparation for the event.
To further safeguard against cyber threats like ransomware and DDoS attacks, the authorities have implemented advanced measures like IP monitoring, network firewalls, and real-time surveillance. The Telecom Security Operation Centre (TSOC) is continuously monitoring these systems to ensure their integrity. Additionally, a vulnerability audit led by IIIT-Allahabad has fortified the digital infrastructure.
Up until now, UP Police have flagged 78 suspicious websites, seven of which have been taken down. Legal actions have led to the arrest of four individuals from Varanasi, Azamgarh, and Nalanda.
With these proactive measures in place, the UP Police and their expert collaborators are committed to ensuring a safe, secure, and seamless experience for the millions expected to attend Mahakumbh 2025.
