Maxtor Continually Strives to Educate SMBs
What drives the HDD market? How is Maxtor addressing the trend?
The HDD market in India is witnessing a number of trends. The shift in the trends from conventiona¤Ämethod of storage to digital storage has increased the need for higher storage capacities. The consumers of today are tech-savvy and increasingly creating personalized digital content. The availability and advancement of digital devices such as digital cameras, digital videos, etc. have encouraged the need to store data digitally. HDD manufacturers are also following this trend to build larger capacity drives. For instance, Maxtor has looked further into the needs of consumers, and it is the pioneer in creating an innovative push-button backup and storage solution (its OneTouch series external drives) that is simple and easy to use.
Elaborate on your recent launch?
The hard drive industry is continuing its transition from the traditional parallel ATA to the SATA interface. Many PC and storage subsystem manufacturers are expected to deploy 3. 0Gb/s SATA products in 2006 to take advantage of the increased interface speed and a richer feature set. Our new introduction of 3.0Gb/s SATA positions us to support industry needs for the new interface across multiple markets. Maxtor’s 3Gb/s Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces on its Maxtor MaXLine III (enterprise ATA applications) and DiamondMax 10 (desktop) hard drives. The 7,200 RPM drives include capacity points up to 300GB, up to a 16MB buffer and a comprehensive set of SATA II features, including native command queuing (NCQ), staggered spin-up, hot-plug capability and asynchronous signal recovery. It doubles the maximum data transfer speed of the original industry-standard 1.5Gb/s SATA interface.
The next introduction is new Maxtor Shared Storage Plus solution, offering users a new three-in-one network drive that provides shared storage, data backup and media streaming for home or small office networks. With capacities of up to a half-terabyte (500GB), it is also the company’s first network drive that extends the advantages of centralized storage to digital entertainment devices. This new drive, available in a 200GB, 300GB, or 500GB storage capacity, is priced at Rs.14, 997.5, Rs.19, 997.5 and Rs.24,997.5, respectively.
What new features will you offer in your products in the near future?
All the offerings are in tune with Maxtor’s commitment to provide customers value for money and user friendliness in the products. For example, some of the following features, which define Maxtor well, include: Multiple Applications – Ability to run multiple applications at the same time, such as games and music, without overwhelming their PC systems. Simpler Backup – The drive should provide easy backup with no complex menus or commands or in-depth technical knowledge. Portability – It enables the executive to be on the move while carrying all necessary work data with him.
What challenges Maxtor foresees in India?
ndia is a dynamic market. The PC penetration is growing at an impressive rate. Coupled with the increase in digital technology, it has opened up more opportunities for different types of storage. It is an exciting period for hard drive manufacturers and each will strive to enhance their products to meet the needs of the consumers. SMBs are beginning to embrace IT in a big way. In a recent dipstick survey, Maxtor conducted with the SMBs in India, it was observed that though the SMBs have started using PCs in their daily work environment, unfortunately they do not do long-term planning when it comes to making their businesses IT-enabled. As one of the leading providers of HDDs and consumer storage solutions, Maxtor continually strives to educate SMBs to back up their data before an unfortunate circumstance happens. The Indian business corporations need to understand that the lifeline of the company lies in the storage infrastructure, which goes beyond their server storage and network. Today, only about 40 per cent of small businesses regularly back up their data and keep it in a safe location, based on the survey.
Maxtor has embarked on raising awareness on the importance of backup for consumers and SMBs. For the SMB community, Maxtor organized events in three cities jointly with the local SMB associations in November 2005. It was a platform to make the businesses aware about the criticality of data protection and storage, and the simple measures they can take to ensure the same. The response that Maxtor received to the SMB events was excellent, with a strong attendee turnout in each city. Maxtor will be taking these successful joint events with local SMB associations to other cities in India in 2006.
Do you conduct training programmes for B- and C-class cities channel partners?
Yes, we do on a regular basis. Just to give you an idea, we held road shows in ten B- and C-class cities to share Maxtor’s plans and strategy for the year and to gain resellers’’mindshare. These platforms were also used to provide training and conduct workshops for the channel partners on the products. It certainly helps us to get a local flavour of the market and come up with innovative ideas for future programmes.
Maxtor is into storage, but these days we see convergence of security and storage ...
Storage and data security go hand in hand, and Maxtor recognizes the consumer’s need for data protection with storage devices. With consumers today increasingly creating their own digital content, their valuable data needs to be secure. Maxtor has this requirement in mind when developing products for the market. For instance, the Maxtor OneTouch range of external hard drives offer a DriveLock security feature for added data protection. This feature allows users to password-protect the contents of the drive, keeping important data safe from unauthorized users. Once a consumer powers down the computer, or the drive is removed from the system, access to the drive will be automatically locked until the correct user defined password is provided. This helps to breach security issues when backing up data.
Similarly, in the newly launched Maxtor Shared Storage Plus external drive (networking), an exclusive user-friendly wizard interface easily designates shared folders for full or limited access for private content. As the market evolves, Maxtor will continue to enhance and provide leading-edge storage solutions that meet consumers’ needs. Maxtor’s award-winning external storage solutions have been well received by the market. For instance, Maxtor OneTouch II has been adjudged the ’’Best External Desktop Drive” by Digit, a leading technology publication in India, whereas MSS has been chosen as the “Network Device Of The Year” by CNBC.
What is your vision for the year 2006?
Maxtor commands more than 30 per cent of the worldwide market share in the desktop sector of the hard disk drive industry and we are confident of replicating the same success story in India.
Maxtor will be closely working with the partners to develop its business for these emerging segments in the year 2006.
