Meta Platforms has started constructing a new data center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The project is valued at over $1 billion, accelerating its efforts to build AI infrastructure and secure computing capacity.
Like other Big Tech players, Meta is intensifying its push to develop large-scale data centers to support its ambitious superintelligence goals, even as environmental and consumer groups raise concerns over the growing energy demands of such expansion.
According to the company, the new data center is expected to generate over 1,000 construction jobs at its peak and about 100 operational jobs upon completion.
Located at the Fair Oaks Innovation Park, Oklahoma, this will be the company’s first data center spreading across more than 2 million square feet.
Meta said it will pay the full cost of water and wastewater service required to support the data center site.
"We produce more energy than we consume in Oklahoma, giving companies like Meta the reliable and affordable power they need to grow and innovate," said Governor Kevin Stitt.
Fortis Construction has been appointed as the general contractor for the project.
Meta said the Tulsa data center marks its 28th U.S. facility and 32nd worldwide.
