New update allows users across desktop, mobile, and SMS to assign tasks directly to AI, enabling automated execution of everyday activities such as email management, scheduling, research, and content creation with minimal manual intervention.
Microsoft has rolled out an upgraded version of its Copilot Tasks feature, allowing users to assign work directly to its AI assistant instead of guiding it step by step. The update is now available across desktop, mobile, and SMS platforms, marking a significant shift toward more autonomous AI-driven productivity tools.
AI that works independently
With the new update, users can describe a task and let Copilot handle execution in the background. The system operates like a dynamic to-do list, capable of completing assigned tasks and notifying users once finished. It can also schedule activities, run them once, or repeat them at set intervals. Microsoft said the goal is to let users “step away” while the AI completes work independently.
Copilot Tasks leverages a virtual browser to interact with apps and services, enabling it to perform actions such as reviewing emails, flagging urgent messages, drafting replies, and filtering out unnecessary subscriptions. It can also track listings, plan travel itineraries, and prepare daily briefings.
Broader productivity use cases
Beyond routine tasks, the tool can convert emails, images, and attachments into structured presentations with charts and talking points. It also supports job seekers by tracking relevant openings and generating tailored CVs and cover letters.
The expansion reflects Microsoft’s broader push to embed AI deeper into everyday workflows, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort across personal and professional tasks.
