Motorola to discontinue Chennai manufacturing facility

After shutting down its India website last month, Motorola Mobility has now suspended its operation at Motorola’s phone assembly and packaging unit in Chennai.

To recap: Motorola Mobility started its Chennai phone assembly unit back in 2008 with an initial investment of Rs. 172 crore.

According to a spokesperson from Motorola Mobility’ “Company’s latest move is a part of global supply chain streamlining. We are now fulfilling customer orders directly from factories, and we have no current or forecast production requirements that would require the continued use of our Chennai facility."

The spokesperson further added, “The decision is taken after working to identify other opportunities for the facility to continue operating. The unit, which Motorola Mobility calls a customer fulfillment centre, does some software installation on the phones, some finishing and packaging.”

As far as employees are concerned, it is found; the company has laid off all 76 employees involved in the business.

It is reportedly said that the suspension would be effective from February 2013.

Industry experts added the latest announcement about the Chennai manufacturing facility has come a day after Google announced that Flextronics will acquire Motorola's manufacturing operations in Tianjin, China.
