Mumbai Emerges as India’s Work-From-Anywhere Hub

The workplace is no longer defined by an office address. Work From Anywhere (WFA) is increasingly becoming part of how professionals structure both their careers and travel, creating new opportunities for cities capable of combining connectivity, infrastructure, accommodation and quality of life.

Mumbai’s strong position in the 2026 Work From Anywhere Index reflects India’s growing relevance in this global transformation. The city performs strongly across factors such as transportation, flexible workspace availability, climate and accommodation—important considerations for professionals who want to remain productive while travelling.

The shift is being reinforced by changing workplace policies. According to the research, 51% of workers say their employers already offer a work-from-anywhere policy, suggesting flexible work has moved beyond a temporary pandemic-era experiment.

The impact on employees is equally significant. Around 90% say WFA has improved their work-life balance, while 80% report higher productivity. This challenges the traditional assumption that productivity necessarily depends on employees being physically present in a corporate office.

A new travel economy is also emerging around this flexibility. Nearly 48% of respondents plan to extend a holiday or short break by working remotely during 2026. The trend is accelerating the rise of “workcations,” where business and leisure increasingly overlap.

This creates opportunities beyond hotels and tourism. Flexible offices, co-working spaces, high-speed connectivity, cybersecurity, cloud services, collaboration platforms and short-term accommodation could all benefit. Significantly, 38% of workers consider access to flexible workspace when selecting a remote-working destination.

For India, Mumbai could represent the beginning of a much larger opportunity. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Pune, Goa and emerging Tier-2 cities have the potential to compete for globally mobile professionals as digital infrastructure and flexible workplaces expand.

The larger message from Mumbai’s ranking is clear: the future of work is becoming location-flexible, and cities themselves are becoming part of the competition for talent. India now has an opportunity to transform its digital strength, hospitality ecosystem and expanding workplace infrastructure into a powerful Work-From-Anywhere economy.
