
A newly discovered scams are currently targeting users of WhatsApp. Here's all you need to know about the scams and how they operate, along with ways to stay safe on WhatsApp.
The scam is now affecting users on WhatsApp. Called "Rediroff.ru", the scam has been spotted across the messaging platform for a few days now.
Using the link Rediroff.ru, scammers are stealing people's personal information including bank account details and card data. The link also has the potential to infect Windows systems along with Apple iOS, Android devices.
According to a CNBC report, the attack began as a scam luring people to promises of free expensive presents.
The modus of operandi is very simple, the scammers send a normal WhatsApp message with the nefarious URL. Users are promised a reward on the website in exchange for filling their personal details displayed as a survey.
The details they demand include name, age, home address, bank information, and more personal data. Once you submit this form, the scammers win!
By using your personal information, scammers can steal money from your bank account and even use your credentials to conduct illegal activities that may never be traced back to them but put you in the centre of this whirlpool.
The advisory is to avoid any links that you're sent on any electronic platform - be it WhatsApp or e-mail or even text messages. If it looks and sounds suspicious, it most probably is.
