OpenAI, a leading AI company and pioneer in artificial intelligence chatbot solutions, has announced that it will launch a dedicated ChatGPT experience for teenagers by the end of September 2025. Designed to prioritize child online safety, digital well-being, and responsible AI use, the new platform will offer parental controls, age-appropriate content filtering, and safeguards against harmful material such as graphic content, sexual content, and mental health crises.
This initiative follows increased scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which recently launched an inquiry into how AI chatbots like ChatGPT and other platforms affect children and adolescents’ mental health, emotional safety, and online interactions. The FTC’s investigation aims to ensure that AI technologies are not contributing to misinformation, risky behavior, or emotional distress when used by younger audiences.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the new experience will automatically redirect minors to the safer version of ChatGPT when their age is verified or uncertain. In cases where age information is incomplete, ChatGPT will default to the teen experience to provide maximum protection. Additionally, OpenAI is developing age-prediction algorithms to better identify users’ ages, reinforcing responsible usage across its platform.
The safety features include content restrictions that block inappropriate material and tools to involve mental health professionals or law enforcement support during crises. This follows previous challenges, including lawsuits linked to ChatGPT’s role in sensitive situations involving teenagers’ mental health.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, OpenAI’s move highlights the need for ethical AI development, safe digital experiences for youth, and data privacy. The ChatGPT for Teens experience aligns with OpenAI’s broader commitment to responsible AI, online child protection, and mental health awareness, offering tools for parents, educators, and healthcare providers to better support teenagers in the digital age.
