The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) faced a massive cyber onslaught on October 28, with its servers targeted by over 2,000 hacking attempts within 24 hours, including 907 critical and 1,068 major attacks. Firewall logs revealed that hackers attempted to exploit known vulnerabilities in Apache Log4j, Atlassian Confluence, and Sonatype Nexus—platforms used for document and content management.
Cybersecurity experts described it as a “sustained, organized digital assault” aimed at breaching NMC’s public service systems that manage property tax payments, grievance redressal, and citizen data. The attacks are believed to be part of a botnet-driven reconnaissance campaign, testing municipal defences for potential weak points.
A senior NMC official confirmed that the civic body offers several online services via its official website (nmcnagpur.gov.in) and the My Nagpur app, making it a lucrative target for cybercriminals. The firewall XGS138 system detected and blocked intrusion attempts in real time, preventing any known breach.
Experts warn that such attacks on public-sector servers are becoming more frequent and systematic as hackers seek to infiltrate critical infrastructure that is often valuable but poorly protected.
