The new feature enables users to navigate, pay, recharge and track transactions through simple voice or text commands, replacing menu-based navigation with intent-driven interactions while maintaining privacy through hybrid on-device and cloud processing.
India’s digital payments major PhonePe has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered natural language search feature that allows users to perform transactions and access services using conversational voice or text commands. Built using Microsoft Foundry, the new capability is designed to make in-app interactions more intuitive and personalised.
The feature enables users to initiate and complete tasks by simply typing or speaking commands. Instead of navigating through multiple menus, customers can enter requests such as paying a contact, recharging FASTag, or checking gold prices, and the system automatically routes them to the relevant interface or service page within the app.
Moving beyond menu-based navigation
According to the company, the tool replaces conventional menu-driven navigation with intent-based routing. By interpreting the user’s intent rather than relying solely on keywords, the AI layer can pre-select recipients, surface relevant contacts, or direct users to appropriate support or information sections.
The system operates on a hybrid architecture that combines on-device and cloud inferencing. PhonePe said that personal and transactional data remains within its secure environment, ensuring privacy safeguards while delivering real-time responsiveness.
Rahul Chari, Founder, Whole-time Director and CTO of PhonePe, said the launch signals a transition from payment platforms being purely transactional utilities to more intelligent and user-centric systems. He added that the collaboration with Microsoft aims to simplify digital payments by understanding user intent rather than just inputs, while maintaining security and privacy.
Growing adoption of natural language interfaces
Puneet Chandok, President, Microsoft India and South Asia at Microsoft, said the partnership reflects the rising adoption of natural language interfaces in India’s digital ecosystem. He noted that Microsoft Foundry provides the foundational capabilities required to build secure, scalable and human-centred AI applications.
The feature will be rolled out in phases across India and will be accessible through the app’s Global Search Bar, Help Center and History tab. Founded in 2016, PhonePe reported over 65 crore registered users and a merchant network spanning more than 4.7 crore outlets as of September 30, 2025.
