Veteran actress Renuka Shahane has opened up about a shocking casting couch experience early in her Bollywood career, exposing the darker side of the film industry. Shahane revealed that a married producer once visited her home and proposed that she live with him in exchange for a monthly stipend, disguising the offer as a brand ambassadorship for a saree company. Both Renuka and her mother were appalled and immediately rejected the proposition.
Speaking candidly, Shahane highlighted how women in the entertainment industry often face coercion and retaliationwhen refusing such advances — from harassment to professional blacklisting and unpaid work. “It’s a club that tries to victimize the victim more,” she remarked.
Reflecting on the #MeToo movement, Shahane expressed disappointment at its fading momentum, noting that many accused individuals have resumed their careers, while survivors continue to face stigma and limited legal recourse without formal complaints. She also mentioned Raveena Tandon’s vigilance, who would frequently change hotel rooms during outdoor shoots to avoid potential harassment, underscoring that even top actresses remain vulnerable.
Shahane’s revelation brings renewed attention to the persistent power imbalance and exploitation in Bollywood. Despite such challenges, she continues to be admired for her integrity, resilience, and advocacy for a safer, more respectful film industry.
