The first iPhone app on Taj Mahal

Go!Places, a heritage tourism startup has announced the launch of the first-of-its-kind iPhone app for the Taj Mahal. Rage Communications developed the app.

Though priced at USD 2.99, as a special introductory offer, Go!Places is making this app available free of cost till the 1st of April 2011.

This app is an audio tour of the Taj Mahal. It includes visuals along with mood-setting music and sound effects that enhance the tour experience. The app contains detailed, well-researched information as well as interesting anecdotes, myths and legends about the Taj that a human tour guide would add. A complete audio-visual package, the app educates tourists on the intricacies of the fabled monument in a witty, entertaining manner.

The app is designed to be highly user-friendly and intuitive. For example, the “Take the Tour” function allows the user to follow a suggested numbered walking route covering all areas of interest in the Taj marked out on a zoomable map. Clicking on a number starts the audio narrative, allowing the users to enjoy the tour at their own pace. Another neat touch is the built-in camera function, which allows the user to take pictures without having to exit the guide to access the phone's camera. A summarized text of the narration is also available for additional assistance.

Other features of the app include: tips for tourists visiting Agra, a list view as well as map view of the places of interest in the Taj, a list of references for further reading and a feedback form.
