Even though TikTok has been banned in India since 2020, its parent company ByteDance has begun recruiting again for roles in its Gurugram office. The advertised positions—Content Moderator (Bengali Speaker) and Wellbeing Partnership & Operations Lead—fall under the company’s Trust & Safety team.
The development has reignited speculation about TikTok’s possible return to the Indian market. However, government officials have clarified that the ban remains unchanged, with no official steps taken to revoke the order.
Before the ban, TikTok had nearly 200 million users in India, making the country one of its largest markets worldwide. The app was blocked on grounds of national security and data privacy concerns, amid rising border tensions between India and China.
While these job postings do not guarantee a formal comeback, they reflect ByteDance’s strategy to keep a foothold in India. The company appears intent on maintaining readiness should circumstances shift.
In effect, TikTok’s cautious hiring signals that its ambitions in India are not over, even as regulatory restrictions remain firmly in place.
