Uninor has announced its non-participation in the bidding for 3G spectrum. The company refuses to participate in the most-awaited auctions because they have not received the 2G spectrum yet. For the 2G spectrum, they have already paid.
Furthermore, the company shares that their current focus is on strengthening of their service in circles they are present in and launching additional circles this year. They would like to concentrate their focus and resources in an area that is by far the mainstay in India – good quality voice service. It is the service that the common man uses and also one where a lot still needs to be done to offer consumers a truly international standard cell phone experience.
For the current and immediately foreseeable data requirements in the Indian market, Uninor believes a good quality 2.75g/EDGE service is sufficient. Again, there is enough ground to be covered to deliver good quality data in India, even within the currently available technologies.
In the end, the company shares their view that they would look at other opportunities and routes to get into 3G at a stage when the market is really ready for it.
