US Congress No to UN Internet Regulation

The US Congress has passed a resolution asking International Telecommunication Union, a U.N. body to keep its hands off the internet.

The UN body is meeting in Dubai to consider new Internet regulations by updating the International Telecommunication Regulation treaty which has been out of bounds for the last 20 years.

The European Union (EU) has also decided to oppose any move by the UN to regulate the internet. According to some, this could lead to a U.N. takeover of the Internet.

"As our delegation's work is underway in Dubai, this vote sends an important signal that Congress is united in the view that the internet is a vibrant and growing tool in creating jobs and business opportunities, that should be protected," said US senator and bill co-author Senator Claire McCaskill.
