The US military is prepared to carry out a strike on Iran as early as this weekend, though President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision, according to sources familiar with internal discussions.
The White House has been informed that American forces could be operationally ready following a significant buildup of naval and air assets across the Middle East. Among the reinforcements is the USS Gerald R. Ford, the most advanced aircraft carrier in the US fleet, which could arrive in the region within days. US Air Force fighter jets and refueling tankers based in the United Kingdom are also being repositioned closer to potential theaters of operation.
Senior national security officials met in the White House Situation Room on Wednesday to review military and diplomatic options. Trump was also briefed by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner regarding indirect talks held earlier this week between US and Iranian negotiators in Geneva.
While Iran and US representatives reportedly agreed on a “set of guiding principles,” major details remain unresolved. The White House has indicated that Tehran is expected to provide additional clarity in the coming weeks.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that diplomacy remains Trump’s preferred path but emphasized that military action is still under consideration. “He is spending a lot of time thinking about this,” one source said, describing ongoing internal deliberations.
As tensions rise, the balance between diplomacy and deterrence appears increasingly fragile, with regional stability hanging on the president’s next move.
