Vi will handle spectrum, network integration, and market access, while AST will provide and operate the satellite system.
In a strategic move to strengthen its position in the telecom market, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has inked a $3.6 billion partnership with US-based satellite communications firm AST SpaceMobile. The agreement aims to deliver direct-to-device satellite connectivity across India, enabling seamless mobile broadband access in remote and underserved regions where terrestrial networks are often unreliable or unavailable.
With this alliance, Vi becomes the third major Indian private telecom player to officially join the rapidly evolving satcom race, following similar initiatives by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel-backed OneWeb. This partnership comes at a critical time for the debt-ridden telco, which has faced financial instability and a sharp decline in investor confidence. The announcement, made just before a key investor meeting, is seen as a bold attempt to reassure stakeholders and revamp the company’s long-term growth narrative.

The announcement, made just before a key investor meeting, is seen as a bold attempt to reassure stakeholders and revamp the company’s long-term growth narrative.
Under the agreement, Vi will be responsible for spectrum management, terrestrial network integration, and regulatory compliance, while AST SpaceMobile will develop, launch, and manage the satellite constellation powering the connectivity. The companies have also committed to co-developing commercial use cases for various sectors including disaster recovery, agriculture, education, and remote enterprise operations.
The partnership underscores growing industry efforts to democratize internet access through space-based mobile internet solutions, as India aims to bridge its digital divide. With the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) encouraging innovation in the satellite broadband space, this alliance is expected to bring next-gen telecom satellite solutions to millions, aligning with the government's Digital India mission.
If successful, the Vodafone Idea-AST SpaceMobile partnership could position Vi as a pioneer in pan-India satellite mobile internet services, potentially transforming rural connectivity and redefining the country’s telecom landscape.
