WhatsApp Images are Used to Hack Phones and Steal Banking Data. A new and dangerous cyberattack method is making waves in India—malware hidden inside WhatsApp images.
Cybercriminals are now using steganography, a technique that conceals malicious code within seemingly innocent image files.
Unlike typical phishing links or OTP scams, this attack unfolds silently, leaving users unaware until financial damage is done.
Once a user opens the infected image, the malware activates in the background, gaining access to sensitive information like banking credentials, one-time passwords, and financial apps.
A recent incident in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, saw a victim lose ₹2 lakh after opening such an image from an unknown WhatsApp number.
The Department of Telecommunications has issued a stern advisory, urging citizens not to download or open image files from unfamiliar sources.
Cybersecurity professionals have labelled this scam “more dangerous than traditional phishing” because it lacks warning signs and executes silently.
How to Stay Protected:
• Avoid images from unknown numbers
• Enable 2FA for banking and payment apps
• Update your device and apps regularly
• Install trusted antivirus software
• Monitor your bank activity frequently
WhatsApp is reportedly developing new tools to detect such threats, but until then, user vigilance remains the strongest line of defense.
