WhatsApp is testing an iPhone feature that will automatically translate incoming messages across 21 languages in real time. Spotted in iOS beta builds, the tool uses Apple’s on-device language packs to preserve privacy and enable offline use. If rolled out, this could allow users to instantly understand messages in different languages without switching apps, streamlining both personal and group conversations. The translations will be processed locally on the device using Apple’s APIs, ensuring end-to-end encryption is maintained.
This means no messages are sent to external servers, addressing privacy concerns. Users can also download language packs for offline translation, making the feature functional without internet access.
Once enabled, incoming messages in the chosen language will be translated automatically, while the original text remains viewable. In group chats, automatic translation will only work if all participants use the same language. Users retain control, with the option to remove translations or view the original messages at any time.
At present, WhatsApp requires users to manually translate each message by selecting it and choosing the translate option. The new system eliminates this step, applying translations automatically in real time. This shift mirrors a broader trend in messaging apps toward seamless, integrated translation tools that reduce friction in cross-language communication.
