WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new update that will disable chat exports and stop automatic media downloads by default. The updates are currently under testing for both Android and iOS, and mark a departure from long-standing features used by millions worldwide. As per this development, the chat export function, which allows users to back up entire conversation histories to platforms like Google Drive and iCloud, may soon be restricted or removed entirely.
Rather, selective backups could be introduced, giving users more granular control over what data gets saved. This move is expected to enhance privacy protection, reduce unintended data sharing, and minimize phone storage issues—a concern for many users with limited space.
WhatsApp update
Another key change involves automatic media saving. Currently, WhatsApp downloads photos, videos, and audio files automatically, depending on the user’s settings. However, the new update may disable this feature by default, requiring users to manually enable media downloads if desired.
While this could prevent clutter and unnecessary storage consumption, it may also inconvenience users who rely on automatic file saving for personal or work-related communication.
Although WhatsApp has not yet issued an official statement, the planned update highlights the platform’s ongoing efforts to prioritize digital safety and user-centric controls. For users who frequently switch devices or rely on regular backups, these changes could pose initial challenges. Still, the long-term impact is likely to be positive, offering better data security and reducing the risks of accidental content exposure.
