WhatsApp Web to roll out personalised chat themes with multiple colour options

The upcoming feature is expected to offer dozens of colour themes and personalised chat styles on WhatsApp Web, enhancing visual appeal and usability while aligning the browser experience more closely with mobile versions.

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new chat themes feature for its web platform, aiming to significantly improve how users personalise conversations. The update is expected to introduce a wide selection of colour-based themes, enabling users to customise chat backgrounds, message bubbles, and overall appearance directly from their browsers.

Currently, customisation options on WhatsApp Web remain limited, with users only able to modify wallpapers and apply basic visual elements. The upcoming feature is set to expand these capabilities by allowing users to apply complete themes that alter both the chat interface and background in a coordinated manner.

Enhanced personalisation across chats

According to early insights, the chat themes will function as predefined visual styles. Selecting a theme will automatically adjust message bubble colours along with the wallpaper, creating a cohesive look across the conversation window. These settings are expected to be accessible through the platform’s configuration menu, making them easy to apply and manage.

In addition to setting a default theme for all chats, users may also have the option to assign different themes to individual conversations. This would allow for greater differentiation between chats, helping users visually distinguish between personal, professional, and group interactions. For instance, a minimal theme could be used for work-related discussions, while brighter, more dynamic styles could be applied to casual chats.

The feature is also expected to offer a broad palette of choices. Reports suggest that up to 49 theme variations may be included, featuring multiple shades within the same colour family. This expanded range is designed to give users more flexibility in tailoring the interface to their preferences.

Privacy and expected rollout

Importantly, the chat themes will remain visible only to the user who applies them. Other participants in the conversation will not see these visual changes, ensuring that personal customisation does not affect the shared chat experience.

The feature is currently under development and has not yet been officially released. It is expected to debut in a future update, likely beginning with beta testers before becoming widely available to all users.

With this addition, WhatsApp appears to be moving towards a more consistent user experience across platforms, bringing its web version closer in functionality and visual customisation to its mobile applications.
