The video-sharing platform is reportedly running a limited test of in-app messaging, potentially allowing users to send videos and hold private conversations without leaving the app, years after the original feature was discontinued.
YouTube is reportedly experimenting with the return of a direct messaging feature, several years after discontinuing a similar option. Early reports and user observations suggest that the platform has begun testing the feature with a small group of users.
The move indicates that YouTube may be exploring new tools to encourage interaction and keep users more engaged within the platform. While the feature has not yet been formally announced, screenshots and feedback from selected users suggest that the test has already begun in limited regions.
The earlier version of YouTube’s messaging system allowed users to privately send videos and short text messages to one another. However, the company discontinued the feature in 2019, explaining that most people preferred using external messaging platforms to share videos.
Limited test among selected users
The newly tested feature appears to offer a simple chat interface within the YouTube app. Users who have access to the test reportedly can send videos directly to friends and exchange messages without leaving the platform.
Although the tool resembles common messaging systems found on social media platforms, the rollout is currently restricted to a small number of accounts. Such limited testing allows the company to observe how users interact with the feature before deciding whether to expand it further.
The messaging capability could make it easier for viewers to discuss videos, share recommendations, and coordinate viewing with friends in real time. By enabling these interactions directly within the app, YouTube may be aiming to make the platform more socially interactive.
Push to increase platform engagement
The reported test comes at a time when many digital platforms are focusing heavily on private messaging and content sharing as ways to increase user engagement.
Features that allow users to send content directly to friends often encourage longer app usage and create stronger user communities. For YouTube, integrating such communication tools could help viewers stay within the platform instead of switching to third-party messaging apps.
However, the company has not confirmed whether the feature will be expanded or introduced globally. For now, the direct messaging tool remains in the testing phase, and its wider availability will likely depend on user feedback and the results of the trial.
