India’s retail sector is undergoing a major shift, with 74% of all retail spending in 29 major cities now digital, up from 45% just two years ago, according to the NeoGrowth NeoInsights: How India Pays report.
Among metros, Hyderabad leads with 82% of transactions digital, followed by Bengaluru and Pune at 79% each. Widespread smartphone adoption, strong internet connectivity, and fintech familiarity are driving this surge. Non-metros are catching up fast: Visakhapatnam (76%), Nagpur (71%), and Chandigarh (68%) show strong uptake, though Kolkata (55%), Jamshedpur (54%), and Rajkot (48%) still lean on cash.
Digital transactions now dominate everyday spending. Personal grooming (83%), education (81%), and dining (80%)are leading, highlighting how lifestyle-driven sectors and small merchants are embracing cashless solutions.
Young entrepreneurs in their 20s and 30s report 80% of revenues from digital payments, while older retailers are quickly adapting, spurred by customer expectations and efficiency benefits.
This transformation reflects three trends: digital dominance, deepening adoption across categories, and the need to bridge regional trust and infrastructure gaps. As India moves toward a trillion-dollar digital economy, cashless is becoming the new normal.
