The feature is expected to be released for testing in the upcoming weeks through a future app update.
WhatsApp, the world’s most popular instant messaging app, is reportedly working on a new privacy and notification control feature for Android users. According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the upcoming update will introduce an option to mute @everyone mentions in group chats, giving users more control over how they receive notifications.
Feature in WhatsApp Beta for Android
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1, although it is not yet available to beta testers. A new “Mute @everyone” toggle has been added under notification settings. By default, it remains disabled and must be manually turned on by users.
The @everyone mention feature was initially designed to let any group member—admins and non-admins alike—notify all participants with one tag. However, frequent misuse often led to unnecessary notifications. The new mute mentions option aims to curb disruptions, offering personalisation and better user experience in WhatsApp groups.
