The new voice-enabled capability for Claude Code allows developers to issue spoken commands and interact conversationally with the tool, reflecting a broader push toward hands-free workflows in AI-powered software development environments.
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has started rolling out a voice-based interaction feature for its developer-focused coding assistant, Claude Code. The new capability aims to simplify how programmers interact with AI tools by enabling spoken commands instead of traditional text inputs.
The feature was announced by Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar on the social platform X, where he said the rollout has initially been enabled for roughly five percent of users. The company plans to expand availability gradually over the coming weeks.
Voice Mode allows developers to activate the feature by typing a specific command that switches the assistant into voice interaction mode. Once enabled, programmers can speak instructions directly to the system, which then processes and executes the request.
A step toward hands-free coding workflows
The introduction of voice-based controls reflects the growing interest in making software development tools more interactive and efficient. Developers using Claude Code can issue commands such as requesting code refactoring or debugging through speech, allowing them to maintain focus without constantly switching between typing and other tasks.
While the feature promises a more natural workflow, Anthropic has not yet released detailed information about its technical limitations. It remains unclear whether there will be restrictions on the number of voice commands or other operational constraints.
The company has also not confirmed whether the voice technology relies on internal development or external partnerships with AI voice providers such as ElevenLabs, which has collaborated with several firms in the generative AI ecosystem.
Anthropic had previously introduced voice interaction capabilities for its general-purpose chatbot, Claude, allowing users to communicate with the system verbally for everyday queries and tasks.
Competition intensifies in AI developer tools
The move comes as competition intensifies in the rapidly expanding market for AI-powered developer tools. Major technology companies including Microsoft with GitHub Copilot, as well as offerings from Google and OpenAI, are competing to attract developers with increasingly advanced coding assistants.
Despite the crowded field, Anthropic’s Claude Code has seen strong adoption. The company earlier reported that the tool’s annualised revenue run rate had exceeded $2.5 billion, while its weekly active user base has grown significantly in recent months.
Interest in the broader Claude ecosystem has also surged, with the Claude mobile application climbing the rankings on the Apple App Store in the United States, highlighting growing demand for AI-driven productivity tools among developers and general users alike.
