The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, aimed at operationalising India’s first data privacy law, will be notified and implemented well before the next session of Parliament, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced.
Speaking on the progress, Vaishnaw said the rules are “practically done now” following extensive consultations. “I must thank the industry, they came up with so much openness, positivity, and constructive ideas. We should be able to publish it well before the next session of Parliament,” he noted. The Winter Session, typically held in November–December, is seen as the timeline.
The DPDP Act, 2023, was passed in Parliament in August last year but has not yet been enforced, as many provisions required detailed rules for implementation. Once notified, the framework will bring in critical safeguards to protect citizens’ personal data and prevent misuse or breaches.
Vaishnaw highlighted that the government had engaged in multiple rounds of consultations with nearly all stakeholders, including industry players and media representatives. Concerns raised by journalists regarding potential misuse of the Act against investigative reporting were also addressed during the process.
Separately, Vaishnaw said the Centre is working closely with gaming industry stakeholders to ensure an orderly transition following recent bans in the sector.
