Gartner, Inc. predicts that by 2028, 40% of organizations leveraging AI will adopt dedicated AI observability tools to monitor model performance, bias, and outputs. This insight was shared during the Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Cloud Strategies Conference held in Sydney on May 11-12.
According to Padraig Byrne, VP Analyst at Gartner, while AI is becoming ubiquitous, many organizations struggle to monitor and build trust in these systems. “That visibility gap makes scaling risky, which underscores the importance of observability. Unlike traditional software, AI decision-making is often opaque, complicating trust and transparency,” he explained. Errors in AI systems can lead to significant financial losses and regulatory challenges.
Gartner defines observability as the ability to understand software behavior through its outputs. For AI, this involves specialized tools that manage and evaluate model behavior, decision-making, and associated risks, including model drift and biases.
The transition to specialized AI observability tools is accelerating due to rising executive concerns over risk management in complex AI environments. Byrne noted that as AI models become more intricate, there is a pressing need for predictive issue detection and real-time insights. Organizations that neglect to implement these tools risk facing significant governance challenges.
Gartner’s research highlights that AI observability encompasses monitoring the availability, performance, and accuracy of AI platforms, crucial for enterprises reliant on AI-driven decision-making. “Without standardized model telemetry, I&O teams will experience lengthy incident resolution times, necessitating complicated manual processes to debug deep learning models,” Byrne added.
To effectively implement AI observability, Gartner recommends that I&O leaders take several critical steps. These include establishing mandatory monitoring policies for all production AI models, standardizing monitoring frameworks across teams, prioritizing infrastructure that can handle high-volume telemetry, and ensuring IT strategies accommodate future monitoring needs.
