Google is testing a bunch of new features with the default keyboard on most Android devices, Gboard. Now, it looks like, one of which is AI-powered writing tools. The latest Gboard beta has added a new “flick keys to enter symbols” feature, which, when enabled, allows users to quickly enter the symbol associated with a key by touching it and pulling it downwards. This is pretty similar to the Apple keyboard on iPads.
Gboard is known as one of the most popular keyboard apps worldwide with a smooth typing experience, predictive text, and emoji suggestions.
New features introduced
One of the most talked about features that is coming to the Gboard is the ‘Flick Keys to enter Symbols’ feature. This will allow users to enter symbols quickly just by touching a key and pulling it downward. The feature will be similar to the Apple keyboard experience on iPads.
While it might take some time to get used to, this feature promises faster access to symbols and can significantly speed up typing once mastered.
Additionally, Gboard is also introducing a new setting to control the number row display. It will be used when typing passwords. The number row feature will be helpful for smaller device owners like the Pixel 9, Galaxy S25 Edge, and OnePlus 13. It will help save screen space without sacrificing usability.
It means users can now choose when and how the number row appears, enhancing typing efficiency on compact screens.
Google is also adding optional key shapes to Gboard. To recall, earlier experiments with circular and pill-shaped shapes received mixed reactions from users, which led the company to make the key shape customization feature optional. This will allow users to choose the key background based on their preferences.
