Grammarly, the world’s most trusted AI-powered grammar checker and writing assistant, has announced a groundbreaking update that expands its services beyond English. For the first time in its 15-year journey, Grammarly now supports five major global languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. This marks a significant milestone in Grammarly’s mission to enhance writing clarity, tone improvement, and content accuracy for users across the world.
Previously focused solely on English — offering features like spelling checks, grammar suggestions, and tone adjustments — Grammarly has now embraced multilingual writing tools. The update, available in beta for Windows, Mac, and Chrome extensions, allows users to simply type in any of the new languages, and Grammarly’s smart detection algorithm automatically identifies the language and offers real-time feedback.
Among the new features, Grammarly introduces paragraph-level rewriting suggestions, making it easier to refine entire sections of text. It also offers in-line translation, enabling users to seamlessly convert their content into 19 additional languages without switching between apps. These powerful tools are designed to help students, content creators, professionals, and language learners communicate more effectively and confidently.
The expansion applies to both free and premium accounts, although some advanced features are exclusive to the paid plans. Grammarly conducted extensive testing with over one million beta users, receiving positive feedback for its accuracy and ease of use.
Ailian Gan, Director of Product Management at Grammarly, stated, “Our users want writing tools that support the languages they think, learn, and communicate in every day. This update reflects our commitment to improving global communication and digital learning.”
With over 40 million daily active users, Grammarly expects this rollout to attract more non-English speakers, helping them enhance professional communication, academic writing, and creative expression. The company also plans to introduce more advanced style and clarity suggestions for these languages over the next year, aligning them with its established English-language offering.
Grammarly’s multilingual expansion is a major leap forward in making AI-driven writing tools accessible to a broader audience, fostering cross-cultural communication, improving content creation, and supporting global education initiatives. This update is set to transform how millions write, edit, and learn new languages every day.
