Telegram's integration of Grok AI comes as the platform struggles to compete with WhatsApp, which has gained an edge by incorporating MetaAI to improve user experience
Elon Musk’s AI venture, Grok AI, is now making its way to Telegram, marking a significant expansion beyond its initial availability on X (formerly Twitter) and the Grok app. This move is seen as a strategic step to increase Grok AI’s reach while also giving Telegram a competitive edge in the AI-driven messaging space.
Telegram’s adoption of Grok AI comes at a time when the messaging platform has been struggling to keep pace with competitors like WhatsApp, which has successfully integrated MetaAI to enhance user experience. Moreover, Telegram has faced legal troubles since August 2024, with CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest further complicating matters. The app has been under government scrutiny for allegedly being used as a hub for illicit activities. With no AI-powered features of its own, Telegram risked falling behind. The integration of Grok AI could help the platform regain relevance and attract premium users.
Premium users gain early access
Unlike WhatsApp’s broadly accessible MetaAI, Grok AI on Telegram will be limited to Telegram Premium and X Premium users. To use the chatbot, users must search for “GrokAI” within the app. While Telegram has confirmed that Grok 3, the latest and most advanced version of the AI model, is being integrated, there is no word on whether free-tier users will gain access in the future.
Despite its expansion, Grok AI has drawn the attention of Indian regulators due to its controversial responses, including uncensored discussions on politics, history, and social issues. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is now monitoring its activity and has sought clarification from X about how the AI model is being moderated.
Unfiltered AI faces growing scrutiny
Grok AI was developed by xAI, a company founded by Musk in 2023, as a direct competitor to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Unlike mainstream AI chatbots, Grok takes an unfiltered and open-ended approach to conversations, which has led to both praise and criticism.
While no official action has been taken against Grok AI or X, its expansion into Telegram will likely intensify regulatory scrutiny as authorities assess its impact on digital communication and AI governance.
