India Sets Up Online Gaming Regulator
India has established the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) under the 2025 Act, effective May 1, 2026, to regulate the fast-growing gaming sector.
The move aims to bring accountability, safety, and clarity, especially distinguishing skill-based gaming from gambling.
Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) is a six-member body led by MeitY Additional Secretary, with representatives from Home, Finance, Information & Broadcasting, Sports, and Law ministries.
Its core role includes classifying games into Online Money Games, Social Games, and Esports categories.
The authority can mandate registrations, issue compliance certificates, and enforce penalties for violations.
It also holds powers to direct financial institutions to block transactions linked to non-compliant or prohibited platforms.
The framework introduces a conditional registration system, focusing on high-risk segments like real-money gaming, while aiming to standardize regulation across India’s fragmented gaming landscape.
