Mara Raises $7M to Counter Drone Swarms

Defense hardware startup Mara is raising $7 million in pre-seed funding led by Khosla Ventures to develop Spike, an automated counter-drone platform designed to protect military forces, government facilities and critical infrastructure from increasingly dangerous small FPV drone swarms.

The emergence of inexpensive first-person-view drones is changing modern warfare. Small drones can conduct surveillance or threaten personnel, vehicles and infrastructure at relatively low cost, creating demand for defensive systems that can detect and respond to multiple airborne threats quickly.

Mara’s Spike counter-sUAS platform is designed around two integrated components: Spotter and Seeker. Spotter provides persistent detection and tracking by combining electro-optical and acoustic sensing with optional low-signature radar, enabling day/night and all-weather monitoring.

Once a threat is identified, Seeker serves as the interception component. It is a compact, tube-launched autonomous interceptor designed to identify and close on designated drone threats without requiring continuous human piloting.

A significant aspect of Mara’s proposition is scalability. Deployment can range from a rucksack-sized system protecting a squad, to vehicle-mounted configurations, and ultimately larger multi-kilometer defensive perimeters protecting bases and other strategic locations.

The commercial opportunity reflects a broader shift in defense technology: counter-drone systems increasingly need to address the economics of asymmetric warfare. Using extremely expensive defensive assets against comparatively inexpensive drones can become operationally and financially unsustainable, increasing demand for scalable, lower-cost interception approaches.

Mara’s funding therefore represents more than another defense-tech investment. It highlights how autonomy, sensor fusion and affordable hardware are reshaping battlefield protection. As drone swarms become a growing security challenge, counter-sUAS technology is emerging as an important new layer of defense for military, government and critical-infrastructure customers.
