Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that a new Aadhaar app will be put out by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) soon. Speaking at the Aadhaar Samvaad event in Delhi, the minister said that the new app has a revamped design, compared to the existing mAadhaar app. It also has a facial recognition feature to securely share Aadhaar data with hotels and other “requesting” entities.
Calling it a “revolutionary” step in India’s digital transformation, the minister shared the update on his social media handle on X, and emphasized that the new app leverages facial recognition technology and artificial intelligence to facilitate instant and secure identity verification.
Key features of the new app -
● Face ID Authentication: Allows users to verify their Aadhaar identity using facial recognition on their smartphones.
● QR Code Verification: Enables quick, contactless verification by scanning QR codes at various touchpoints like hotel receptions, retail outlets, and airports.
● 100% Digital and Consent-Based: The app ensures users have full control over when and where they share their Aadhaar information
With this app, Indian citizens will no longer need to carry physical Aadhaar cards or submit photocopies for identity checks. The minister highlighted its practical use cases for everyday scenarios such as hotel check-ins, shopping, and travel.
