The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) told a Parliamentary Committee there is currently no proposal from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to introduce a unified cybercrime legislation. The disclosure came in the Parliamentary Committee on the Empowerment of Women’s report on ‘Cyber Crimes and Cyber Safety of Women’, which flagged the increasing cross-border nature of cyber offences.
"While there is no current proposal from I4C, MHA, for a unified cybercrime legislation, the Ministry of Home Affairs, is continuously assessing legal and policy gaps and supporting capacity building and inter-agency coordination to address emerging cyber threats, including those targeting women," the report said.
"The committee further wants that technological reforms be complemented by a responsive, coordinated governance framework. MHA and MeitY must jointly establish a unified Cyber Safety Coordination Mechanism for Women, enabling seamless data-sharing, cross-platform action, and policy coherence across NCRP, Sahyog, PMT, Grievance Appellate Committees, and authorised agencies under the IT Act," the report further said.
Highlighting the urgency of the issue, the committee pointed to the growing misuse of anonymity tools, encrypted platforms and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, which are making detection and attribution more difficult for law enforcement agencies.
MHA further confirmed that it is continuously assessing legal and policy gaps and supporting capacity building and inter-agency coordination to address emerging cyber threats, including those targeting women.
