Pegatron’s new Chennai plant will manufacture 5G devices for sectors like manufacturing and logistics, support exports to global markets, and gradually increase local value addition as India’s telecom component ecosystem matures
Taiwan’s electronics giant Pegatron is expanding its Indian operations with a new factory in Chennai focused on manufacturing 5G small cells, catering to both domestic private networks and global demand. The facility is part of the firm’s broader strategy to deepen its telecom manufacturing presence and leverage India as a design and export hub.
According to reports quoting Jayant Moghe, AVP and Country Manager at Pegatron India, the new Chennai unit will serve enterprises deploying private 5G in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, mining, and automation. The factory will also support exports to markets in Europe, Southeast Asia, and potentially North America.
Currently, Pegatron designs its products in Taiwan, but plans call for increased local value addition over time. Moghe stated the company is readying to engage more of India’s component ecosystem as it matures. He also noted that Pegatron’s telecom portfolio spans small cells, cameras, CPEs, Wi-Fi, GPON devices, and is developing edge AI hardware.
Strategic Shift from iPhone Assembly to Telecom Focus
Pegatron’s prior Chennai facility, once instrumental in iPhone assembly, has been handed over to Tata Electronics, making Tata the first Indian firm to make iPhones in the country. This transition aligns with Apple’s evolving India strategy and clears the way for Pegatron’s new specialization in telecom equipment.
Pegatron already operates a private 5G-enabled factory in Batam, Indonesia, producing AI and automation systems—a model it might replicate in India. Moghe confirmed the company is evaluating incentives under India’s telecom‑manufacturing Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and praised government policies under Make in India and the semiconductors push for strengthening the manufacturing ecosystem.
He also remarked on Pegatron’s interest in collaborating with Indian startups and academic institutions, particularly in combining local software innovation with Pegatron’s global hardware expertise. As demand for private 5G surges in India, Pegatron sees this Chennai plant as a strategic investment in its long-term presence and a reflection of its confidence in India’s techno‑industrial future.
