India’s refurbished electronics market is thriving as the festive season drives demand for budget-friendly laptops, smartphones, tablets, cameras, and peripherals. These products, typically priced 30–50% lower than new models, appeal to students and small businesses seeking quality and affordability.
The country’s internet user base is expected to surpass 900 million in 2025, up from 886 million in 2024, with rural areas contributing 55% (488 million users). This digital growth, coupled with increasing AI adoption—where 9 in 10 internet users engage with AI-powered apps—has heightened the need for cost-effective devices. Additionally, growing awareness of e-waste and the circular economy is steering consumers toward sustainable refurbished options.
E-commerce platforms like Amazon Renewed, Cashify, and NewJaisa are leading this shift, offering certified products with 6–12 month warranties to build consumer trust. During festive sales, Amazon and Flipkart report strong demand, with sellers like Cashify and ControlZ providing steep discounts, flash sales, bundled deals, and loyalty programs. E-commerce marketplaces project record-breaking sales of Rs 1.2 lakh crore this season, a 27% rise from last year, with quick commerce accounting for over Rs 14,000 crore. Platforms aim to convert 10% of new smartphone buyers to refurbished devices.
Imports are vital to the market, with channel partners sourcing products through Mumbai, Chennai, and Mundra ports. Sea shipments in 20–40 ft containers carry 500–2000 units, often sold under private brands with limited services. Imported devices remain cost-competitive, with average landing prices of $19 for monitors, $10 for HDDs, $50 for tablets, and $150 for laptops, enabling significant retail discounts.
Laptops hold a 74% market share in the refurbished segment, followed by tablets, cameras, and peripherals. This growth aligns with the Asia-Pacific region’s broader trend, driven by urbanization, a young population, and expanding e-commerce.
To sustain this momentum, trust is key. Certified products and reliable warranties are essential for long-term growth. VARINDIA recommends consumers verify authorized partners on official brand websites before purchasing to ensure quality and reliability.
