Reliance Industries and Meta Platforms have partnered to build a 168 MW hyperscale data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking Meta's first built-to-suit data centre project in India and reinforcing the country's growing role in global AI infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Reliance will develop the facility within two years, with an option to expand capacity as demand grows. Meta will lease the data centre to support its global infrastructure and AI computing requirements.
The project is one of the largest AI-focused data centre investments announced in India and signals increasing interest from hyperscalers in building dedicated infrastructure in the country as AI workloads drive demand for computing capacity.
Reliance will provide end-to-end services for the project, including design, construction, renewable power supply, network connectivity and ongoing operations, positioning itself as a full-service provider for hyperscale AI infrastructure.

The Jamnagar location was selected for its access to renewable energy, desalinated water for cooling, proximity to western submarine cable landing stations and connectivity through Jio's fibre network.
The companies said the facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, aligning with their sustainability objectives while addressing the high energy and water demands of AI data centres.

For Meta, the investment expands its global AI infrastructure footprint as it continues to increase spending on computing capacity to support AI models and services. The company has been investing aggressively in data centres worldwide to meet growing demand for AI training and inference workloads.
For Reliance, the partnership strengthens its ambitions in digital infrastructure and AI, extending a strategic relationship with Meta that already spans connectivity, digital commerce and technology initiatives.
Mukesh D. Ambani described the project as a milestone for India's digital infrastructure, saying it demonstrates the country's readiness to become a global AI hub.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the Jamnagar facility will help the company scale its AI infrastructure globally while deepening its long-term investment in India.
The announcement also aligns with the Indian government's push to position data centres as strategic national infrastructure and attract global AI investments. As enterprises and AI developers require increasingly larger computing clusters, India is emerging as a potential destination for hyperscale infrastructure backed by renewable energy and expanding digital connectivity.
The project underscores a broader shift in the AI ecosystem, where technology companies are moving beyond cloud leasing arrangements and investing in dedicated, purpose-built facilities to secure long-term access to computing resources.
